Symmetry

AI capability and protection must advance together. Defensive co-scaling means growing evaluations, oversight, governance and safeguards at the same speed as intelligence.

We are very good at scaling intelligence.

More compute. Better models. Longer context. Stronger reasoning. More autonomy.

But there is a second curve that matters just as much: our ability to understand, control and defend against the systems we are building.

This is the idea behind defensive co-scaling.

As AI capabilities grow, the mechanisms surrounding them must grow too: evaluations, monitoring, cybersecurity, interpretability, governance, human oversight and safeguards against misuse. Capability and protection must advance together.

Not eventually. At the same time.

The easiest analogy is human alignment.

Humans are not born aligned with society. We arrive with intelligence, instincts and an impressive ability to create chaos. Then, over many years, we build the surrounding system: parents, education, values, laws, social norms, accountability and trust.

As a child becomes more capable, we do not simply give them more power. We increase responsibility alongside freedom.

You can ride a bicycle before driving a car. You can manage pocket money before controlling a company budget. Society gradually expands what you are allowed to do as your judgment and accountability develop.

AI needs a similar progression.

We should not think of alignment as a one-time training exercise that produces a perfectly obedient machine. Human alignment does not work like that either. It is continuous, imperfect and supported by institutions.

The model is only one part of the system.

A highly capable AI without effective oversight is like giving a brilliant teenager unlimited money, a private jet and no parents. Intelligence alone does not guarantee wisdom. Capability does not automatically create responsibility.

Defensive co-scaling therefore cannot be treated as a brake on innovation. It is the infrastructure that makes more innovation possible.

Cars scaled because roads, seat belts, traffic laws and insurance scaled with them. Aviation scaled because navigation, maintenance and air-traffic control did too.

AI will follow the same pattern.

The winners will not merely build the most powerful models. They will build systems that remain dependable as their power increases.

We must scale intelligence.

But we must scale our ability to live with that intelligence at exactly the same speed.
